I was immediately arrested by the little prints in the snow, not because they were unusual, but because they seemed to have such purpose. I had often seen snow tracks—those of rabbits seeking shelter, deer plodding down a trail, dogs romping through the drifts. But these were turkey tracks that were making a trail straight to the entrance of the large office building. I often thought of these creatures as wanderers, but these tracks seemed to focus intently on the doorway of the building. It made me think about the paths our lives take—sometimes randomness seems to barge into our stories too often. It feels like everything is taking a round about path to no particular destination, or life is just trying trick us into chaos instead of a purposeful path. We’re not sure if we’re putting one foot in front of the other or if we’re taking two steps back. How can we be sure we’re following God’s plan? Where can we find reliable guidance? Let me share a passage that has meant a lot to me when my path seems beset by randomness and harsh roadblocks: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” (Isaiah 30:15) This passage shows that finding God’s purpose doesn’t hinge on our own brilliance or wisdom or hard work, it hinges on an attitude of trust. Quietness and peace definitely factors into an attitude of trust. And another Bible promise says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) “But,” you might be thinking, “How can I make myself feel quiet and peaceful? Feelings are feelings. It’s not as if I choose to feel stressed—I just feel the way I feel.” Trusting isn’t always easy, but the biggest way to realize God’s great love for us and trust Him more deeply is to take a longer look at the big picture of God’s plan as presented in the Bible. If we repeat God’s promises and see how they fit together into a beautiful picture of His grace, we can find rest even life seems to be going crazy. When we realize that He holds the reins of our story, no matter how chaotic it may seem, we can remember that God’s big master plan of victory lies behind the immediate circumstances. Zoom out, see the big picture, and realize that God is in control.
